Savi's Workshop Lightsaber
My Custom Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop

Galaxy’s Edge Savi’s Workshop

This is a personal review of my experience building a custom lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop in Disney World. I was a huge Star Wars fan growing up, so this was a fantastic opportunity to recreate something that I loved as a child. The experience was something I will never forget.

From the opening storyline to the to the final words of wisdom by Master Yoda, this is a truly remarkable experience that any Star Wars fan will enjoy.

Here is a small video of the opening story line:

The main actor playing Savi as well as his “Gatherers” really made the atmosphere entertaining. Savi’s voice and storytelling really set the mood for the entire experience.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Cost – $199 plus tax

Before we get into the details of the experience of building your very own custom lightsaber, we need to get the ugly truth out of the way.

Building a custom lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop is not cheap. Period.

At $199.99 plus tax, you may want to think twice about it. However, it is a fantastic experience that you will only need to do one time. So, if you can afford to do it, we highly recommend it.

The lightsaber is way beyond a basic toy. It is made entirely of custom parts that you pick, and it has some weight to it — so it’s not like you get a piece of cheap plastic. It’s actually made from crafted metal.

You are really paying for the experience in the workshop, and that is totally worth it. Disney spared no expense (as usual) in decorating the room.

So, the decision really comes down to one question: How much of a Star Wars fan are you? If you only have one person in your group wanting to build a lightsaber, then I would recommend that they do it. If you have an entire family wanting to build them, you may want to reconsider, as the price tag can quickly start to add up to some serious money.

The experience really seems to be geared toward adults. There is no age limit on who can build a lightsaber, but I do not believe that the price is worth it for a very young child.

Savi’s Workshop Reservation

Reservations are highly recommended to build your custom lightsaber. You can stop by and see if an opening is available during your vacation, but nothing is guaranteed.

If there is an opening, you will need to use a major credit card to hold your spot. Once you have your reserved time, keep note of it because if you are a no-show or if you cancel within 24 hours of your reservation, your card will still be charged. You may cancel up to 24 hours in advance without penalty.

Only the builder and a single guest is allowed in the workshop, as it is not very big. Your guest does not have to be named during the reservation.

How Long Does Savi’s Workshop Take

The actual time spent assembling your lightsaber is about 15–20 min. However, the complete experience will take about 45 minutes from the time you check in to the time you leave the workshop.

Plan on arriving at Savi’s no sooner than 15 minutes prior to your reservation. They are pretty strict on this one. I got there about 25 minutes early, and I had wait for 10 minutes before they would allow me to check in.

Once you check in, you will select your lightsaber type (from the list below) and receive your cloisonné pin. Then you will be ushered to a side area while waiting for the entire group of “builders” to arrive.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Types

  • Protection and Defense
Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.
  • Peace and Justice
Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.
  • Elemental Nature
This theme embodies the Force—an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones and Rancor teeth.
  • Power and Control
Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.

Once your entire group arrives, you will then be ushered into the workshop together by one of Savi’s Gatherers.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Options

When you do the math, there are literally 1000s of different combinations of custom lightsabers that can be assembled at Savi’s Workshop. You will have already chosen your hilt type at check-in.

Upon entering the actual workshop, you will choose your Kyber Crystal and individual pieces that will make up your lightsaber as explained below.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Parts

The assembly of your lightsaber is in two phases.

During the first phase, you will select the Kyber Crystal, which will determine the color of your lightsaber. There are 4 different colors to choose from:

  • Blue — Once held by Obi-Wan Kenobi and now Rey
  • Green — Once held by Master Yoda and Luke Skywalker
  • Violet — Rare and beautiful, once held by Master Mace Windu
  • Red — The crystal of power, once held by Darth Vader and now Kylo Ren

Next, a tray of parts will be provided to you by the Gatherers based on your theme and cloisonné pin. Each tray of parts includes:

  • 1 hilt
  • 4 sleeves (pick 2 of the 4)
  • Select 1 of the 2 emitters
  • Pick 1 of the 2 pommel caps
  • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)

This is the set that I had to choose from using the Power and Control type.

Each person who is building a lightsaber gets their own tray that consists of parts that match the cloisonné pin reflecting their hilt style.

Starting from the hilt located on the left side of your parts tray, you will insert your Kyber Crystal until you feel it snap into place. If you have any issues, stop and one of the Gatherers will come and assist you.

You will then work from left to right and choose 2 of the 4 sleeves. These will screw onto the hilt. Be careful to only hand tighten them. Once the sleeves are in place, select 1 of 2 emitters and 1 of 2 Pommel caps. Finally, select an activation plate and switch.

Fully Assembled Lightsaber

Once you have fully assembled your lightsaber, you place it on the stand in front of you.

Once everyone has completed their assembly, Savi will once again take center stage. At this point, the Gatherers will come around and attach your hilt to the blades that are semi-hidden on the table while Savi is speaking. He will ask everyone if they are ready to become one with their lightsaber and ask everyone to step forward and grasp their sword.

Everyone together will light their lightsaber for an outstanding finale start.

The conclusion of your building experience is with inspirational music and congratulatory words of wisdom from Master Yoda himself.

Upon exiting Savi’s Workshop, you will receive a carrying case to keep your lightsaber protected throughout your visit in the park and on your trip home. The case is well built and extremely padded as to not break your precious item! The best thing about the case and lightsaber is that it is TSA approved and will fit in the overhead luggage bins on airplanes.

Final Words On Savi’s Workshop

For me, the experience was totally worth the cost. I am so glad that I was able to make another memory at one of my favorite places in the world. If you can afford the experience and have the time, I highly recommend it.

Because Galaxy Edge Savi’s Workshop is located in Disney Hollywood Studios, be sure to know the latest park open and closing times!
