How to Create a Container Garden on the Cheap!
In our home, being frugal also means we don’t let anything go to waste. We look for unique ways to recycle, repurpose, and even upcycle some of the items we considered throwing away. If you live in a small space or are looking for an easy way to get started gardening, container gardening can be a great way to enjoy fresh herbs, flowers, and produce without having a full garden. Here is how you can create a container garden on the cheap.
Make containers out of what you have
Juice boxes, reusable grocery bags, trash cans, and even old croc shoes can be used to build a container garden! Look around your home for items you are no longer using, and see if you can use any of them to make a garden. My favorite type of container to use is old baskets and bins.
Use dollar store supplies
During the spring months, you can find seeds and all sorts of other great gardening supplies from the dollar store. Dollar Tree has seeds ranging from flowers to vegetables, gardening tools, and even pots. If you go into the stationery section, you can also find labels to label your new containers.
Grow new vegetables from your used produce
Green onions, peppers, and many other vegetables can be regrown using scraps from produce! Many of these vegetables can be regrown in glasses or containers in as little as a few weeks! Make sure to do some research ahead of time to make sure they don’t need a larger plant after a few weeks and think twice before you throw out the unused parts of your vegetables.
Make a windowsill or porch planter
Many of the plants you will be growing will require sunlight to grow. There are a few exceptions to this, but for the sake of this section, we are going to assume they need sunlight. Instead of buying expensive windowsill planters, you can make your own! Add hooks to your bins for easy hanging near the windows or to attach to your porch rails to keep them off the ground. You can find a tutorial for making an herb planter box here.
Find cheap gardening soil
You don’t have to head to your local gardening center to get soil for your garden! Many discount stores or even home improvement stores will have great deals on the soil during the early spring months. Look on Craigslist for free dirt as well if you’re on a tight budget, just make sure you have a way to haul it before you go to pick it up.
Finding free or low-cost containers
You can find many free containers for your container garden, but you might need to get a little creative. Search the free section of Craigslist or ask around for free pots if you can’t find any there. If you are okay with plastic containers, you can look at Dollar General or Dollar Tree for plastic pots and even thrift stores for upscale pots at a deep discount.
Container gardening doesn’t have to blow your budget! If you follow these tips, you can have a successful frugal garden in just a few small containers.
