12 HOT Tips for Saving BIG at Target!

We’ve all done it before, gone into Target for just one thing and came out with a cart full of bags. Frequent trips to Target are irresistible, but you certainly don’t want to spend all your money in one store. There are so many ways to save money at Target that go far beyond coupons. I’ve searched the internet and gone through the stores to gather as many potential money saving tips as I could. I’m going to show you just a few ways you can save big at Target, you know, since you’re going to go anyway.

Target Sales Ad

New promotions start every Sunday at Target, so be sure to check the sales ad to know what’s on sale. Target has markdowns ALL the time (especially after holidays).

Target’s (unofficial) weekly markdown schedule is as follows:

  • Monday: electronics, accessories, kid’s clothing, books, baby, and stationery
  • Tuesday: women’s clothing, domestics, pets, and food (market)
  • Wednesday: men’s clothing, health and beauty, lawn and garden
  • Thursday: houseware, lingerie, shoes, toys, sporting goods, décor, and luggage
  • Friday: auto, cosmetics, hardware, home improvement, and jewelry

Clearance

Target stocks hundreds of different items for every occasion. Those seasonal items you drool over during the holiday season almost always show up in the clearance section not even a few days after the holiday ends. Whenever I’m in Target, I make it a point to stop by the seasonal clearance section to check out the deals on holiday items.

Target marks down seasonal items as follows:

  • 50% off the day after the holiday
  • 75% off three days after
  • 90% the week after

These may vary by the store and holiday, but typically this is the usual markdown schedule. There might be slim pickings when prices reach the 90% mark, but it’s still worth the search! You never know what you’ll find.

How do you know if an item will be further marked down?

Target has a system for marking down their items. If the price ends in .60 or 0.08 the item will most likely be marked down further. If the item price ends in .04 this is the final clearance price.  This one I have not personally investigated much on, because by the time I go to find the final clearance priced item it’s usually gone. Be careful about waiting for items you need this way. There’s a good chance by the time you wait for the rock bottom price it will be gone.

Endcaps

From time to time, Target hides some of the clearance items for that section of the store in the endcaps! You can find discount planners, kitchen items, and even household goods on these endcaps. Anything Target deems clearance worthy is usually on the endcap of each aisle. Check the endcaps before you wander through the aisles.

Coupons

Target’s website has a whole section dedicated to coupons (both manufacturer and Target specific). Target is one of the few retailers that allows you to stack coupons! You can combine manufacturer coupons with store coupons. I’ve gotten a few things free from stacking before.

You can also text COUPONS to 827438 to receive Target coupons to your phone. Text every time you go to Target and you can skim the daily deals as well.

Price Matching

Target price matches certain retailers. If you find an item sold at Target for a better price at Target.com, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, ToysRUs, BabiesRUs, or a competitor’s local printed ad, all you need to do is bring in the original receipt and proof of the lower price within seven days and they will honor the price.

Cartwheel by Target

Target’s Cartwheel app is packed full of discounts! You can stack these savings with your target printed coupons AND manufacturers coupons! If you use a Target coupon, manufacturer’s coupon, and a discount from Cartwheel, you could be saving big.

Target REDcard

Target offers two store card options, a debit and credit card which gives you 5% back on your purchases. The debit card links directly to your checking account so you don’t have to worry about paying off your purchase later. The credit card works just like any other store credit card. If you don’t think you can remember to pay off the balance later, get the debit card and save yourself the trouble. Having either of these gives you an extra 30 days to return items and free shipping at target.com as well. SIGN UP HERE

Target Registries

Have a baby on the way, starting college or getting married soon? Sign up for a Target Registry online! After your event, any remaining items are 15% off!

Target’s dollar section

You can always find sweet deals near the front of the store in Target’s dollar section. This is a great way to pick up a few things you need at a $1! I have found everything from coloring books to stockings to storage bins here. Before you search the store, make sure to check the dollar section.

Gift card deals

Occasionally, Target will have gift card deals with qualifying purchases. You can find these deals in Target’s Weekly ad or located on the shelves throughout the store. Check to see if any items you buy regularly come with a gift card. Buying in bulk and getting a gift card is totally worth it if you are able to!

Free Samples at Target.com

Periodically, Target’s website will have free samples available. All you need to do is go on their website and look for the free samples area, take a short survey, and your sample will be delivered to you in three to five days.

Target has some great ways to save. I utilize many of these tips to save money every time I walk in the store. If you aren’t using these tips to help you save, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! Even though there are so many ways to save, make sure to always shop with a list and get only what you need.
